So I watch videos of Linus Sebastian on youtube quite often. He's entertaining to watch and even though I don't feel like I learn a lot from his show, I'm usually wowed by the cool projects like using two completely separate computing environments off of one gaming computer. I think they even expanded that to seven computers. He's also great at expanding my vocabulary so if I see something I don't understand and I need a quick definition, I'll usually put in a search term and his name will pop up. I usually prefer Eli the Computer Guy since he teaches his stuff in the forms of a class rather introducing many, many topics than just "what is this?" "what is that?" Eli the Computer Guy gives me a curriculum to work with.
Anyways, I clicked on a youtube video that showed a thrift-computer store that I thought would be awesome and maybe even lucrative to work with. However, there's so much more than that! The non-for-profit accepts donations from others and they reuse and recycle everything. They take monetary donations to aid in repairs and you can buy cheap hardware from them as well. The best part, in my opinion, is that they offer internships and real life skills. If you can't afford a PC, you can work 24 hours and get a PC. So if you've never had one, they'll give you one running Ubuntu right out of the box, which I think is simply amazing. If they were closer, I would sign up for an internship today and work during the summer, but it's unpaid and it's also in Oregon, so I'd have to at least get paid minimum wage to afford an apartment, and although the class experience is valuable, it's not feasible for me to work there. Maybe I'll donate some old hardware to support the cause though since I have some extra crap I'm not using.
