I’m Considering Becoming a Skydiving Instructor

Have you ever sat at your desk job and wondered what the heck you’re doing there? I feel like for me, every time I get stuck in my computer science cubicle stuck making some algorithm, I’m going to sit and wonder what other things I could be doing at this moment.

Oftentimes, I think about the things I know I love. I love going out into nature. I love getting off campus. I love eating new foods and sharing my love of piano with others. 

Of course, I’ve acted upon some of these enjoyable activities. I teach an 8 year old piano and adore every moment I get to teach her piano lessons. I make it a priority to get out and take a friend to walk to Carmel’s or Dairy Queen two miles down the bike path from our school whenever the weather gets nice.

But still, in my career, I’m studying logic gates. I’m working through a Quizlet set of logic I will probably never use as a programmer. It’s fascinating, but whenever I’m building these complex multiplexers (which isn’t worth your time to read; so I won’t describe), I think about going on cabin trips... or playing Rocket League with my friends online.

But lately, I’ve decided that on the side, I can make a small career being a skydiving instructor. It’ll take a lot of work and a lot of money. I have to have so many hours of being up in the air and I think over 500 jumps from a quick Google Search, but do you know how awesome that would be!

Hi, I’m Mike Chase. I write code, teach piano lessons, and am a skydiving instructor. Once I get a job and earn enough money, I’m going to seriously consider going skydiving a lot and becoming an instructor so I can take my children skydiving and they can become skydiving instructors if they so choose. It’s such an abnormal lifestyle that I can do on the weekends and it’s something I think I would absolutely love. So why not do it?

I chose the world of computer science in part because it fascinates me. It gives me the tools to be even more creative in everything I do, but most importantly, it will give me the financial freedom to have more opportunities like become a skydiving instructor or work towards anything else I want to do. I can go travel the world instead of drinking on weekends. I can become a skydiving instructor because I can hire an accountant to do my taxes faster than I can instead of doing it myself.

What a time to be alive.
