Stories From an ASM, Part 2

Today was our last day running the musical Spectacle. It was really cheesy, but overall, it was a good time. I'm taking a break from studying calculus to draw this cartoon and think about my biggest problem there: making friends. The people at Boll are nice, but it's definitely a close-knit group - one that I hope to be a part of next year; however, friendships take work, and friendships take time. Right now, they are all striking the set, and I am not there with them. I will be - I told them I'd come back and I left my stuff there. Although I'm not required to strike at all (I'm not employed), it's a nice thing to do, and I feel slightly bad leaving them with all the work while I do homework and take a drawing break.

A few months ago, I was filled with love. Not actual love, but more so the idea of there being a person to be around. It hit me later that I don't want a girlfriend. I just want a best friend again. Although that comic seems is "love" related, I find those types of conversations in my day to day conversations with friends. And not all friends - just some friends. I really can't figure out why - and now isn't the time to think about it because I should really be studying. I'm going to try and answer that question later... why do some of my friendships turn out that way, ending up as "how are you... good, how are you?" Then I'll try to answer the question what makes the other friendships more special? Some of it has to do with the other conversation partner. But everyone has their own special personality once you break that weird and awkward barrier, and how I interact with that person probably has a lot to do with how much they'll share with me and how much I'll share with them.

I haven't posted a lot recently, but if you have conversations that go beyond this superficial, awkward layer, you'll know that I believe strong friendships come from setting common goals and achieving them together. Now, I only volunteered in Boll for a week, but I volunteered for something like 40 hours. I've had a lot of friendships that sparked in one night that went way deeper than any of the friendships I developed at Boll. Even though there was a common goal and everything was lined up, I don't see myself hanging out with anyone at Boll for the rest of this year.

A possible response may be that none of them are seeking new friendships, for they are already a close family that one extra person cannot join on the fly. That's the best guess I've got for now.

So many more stories from this week. Some good, some bad. I'd love to share them all - but there's only so much time in a day. I'm running on five hour energy right now mixed with iced tea. I'm going to try and go back at 11:30 to help out. The crew will be there until probably 3:00am. Although I'm doing calculus homework, I don't think I'm going to go to class tomorrow. I think catching up on sleep with yield more results - and we're not learning any new material in Calculus anyways tomorrow. Prof. Ober is simply going over homework (that I didn't do... yet).

I probably shouldn't post that all over the internet, but the short explanation is that I learn a different way through Khan Academy or Paul's math notes. They give me instant feedback on my answers - I learn better through making mistakes and learning from them. Textbooks don't break down every answer and provide step by step solutions, so I usually learn calculus elsewhere.

Welp - back to it. More comics to come. Hopefully with less inspiration from Reddit next time. Although I love this guy's drawing style. It took 5 minutes to draw, 5 minutes to color, and a few minutes to write the text. Most drawings of mine take hours depending on how detailed I get. I'll be able to speed up that process as I continue with these. Maybe more if I take some fine arts programs.
