An Argument for Using Your Phone All the Time

Slaphappy Mike Chase time:

Usually I'm the last to support the iPhone takeover, but the three of you who actually read this know I think social media is the stupidest thing that's happened to the US in the last 10 years. The same people know that I have too many friends and it drives me insane when I walk somewhere and have to pull out an earbud and say "hi." The point of me wearing headphones is so I can ignore the rest of humanity and the entire life around me. That's partly why I ride my bike everywhere is so I don't have to deal with bullshit:

"hi how are you"
"good, how are you"
"I'm kind-of pissed off that we're exchanging meaningless words to maintain some sort of fake relationship. But I'm not ready to deal with that yet so I'll just say I'm good."

I'm growing jealous of the people wearing headphones & these dinguses who walk around with their phone in their hand ignoring the world by immersing themselves in some form of entertainment.

You know how we all get really nervous about changing our major even though it likely won't have anything to do with the field we actually end up studying. (I wonder if I can cross the bridge and get a masters in something like engineering if I find out I don't want to make $60K for the rest of my life). It's like that for me with any behavioral change so instead of it being Mike Chase slaphappy hour everyday of my life I live the boring mundane lovely Mike Chase that everyone loves and eventually tries to convince you to do whatever the hell they want you to do and for some reason you often say yes to the point of it driving you crazy.

The big question is whether or not I really want to be a theater major. Or am I just doing it to make my boss and the boss of the boss happy?

If I was glued to my phone all the time, then I wouldn't have a hundred friends. I don't even know why today was stressful, but somehow it was. Oh yeah - because lunch, then being interrupted in the library, and probably 10 other small things. And the emails. Oh - the emails. And UK immigration offices being closed meaning I might have to go to Chicago to submit my Visa application.

I envy Willie. He just sits in the background of our theater, does his job... and he seems pretty darn happy. He lives his own life with a girlfriend off campus. He doesn't try too hard. I try too hard.

Is it time to stop trying too hard? Does anything I do in college matter as long as I get the piece of paper saying I did a thing?

Bonus: A cop writing up someone for parking too close to the stop sign while the cop is parked too close to the stop sign to give a ticket.
