Let's Quit Life and Become Pirates - thoughts on security.
I'm taking a theater appreciation class, and in it, doubles a psychology class, asking why do we act the way we act. It's a great class, but also a curse because it makes you look at all the other different lives people are leaving, and it leaves you envious, about everything. My life is pretty perfect - 'twas born with a silver spoon in my mouth you could say. My parents never got divorced. They're happy. I have money of my own, and I don't pay most of my bills, so I can save it. I've got plenty of friends. I'm pretty active in my community. My family is the one of the best in the world - and sometimes I do take that for granted (I should show some more appreciation to them... thanks mom/dad/Natalie if you're reading this). I go to a great school with a great GPA on track to graduate on time with honors. I don't have clinical depression. I've never thought about suicide. I don't get more anxious than the average person. My life is perfect in almost every way - yet, it's starting to bore me.
Humans in general end to shape uncertainties around us. We become such predictable creatures. We wake up at the same time, go to sleep at the same time, do the same things on weekends, talk to the same people. We dislike uncertainty, and we don't like trying new things. I have so much security in my life, that it's at the point where it's boring. And the question becomes - how can I change that. The obvious answer is to take new risks and try new things rather than continue to obey the rituals of formalized action.
Maybe I should go to a bar tonight. Maybe a dance club. Maybe I should get wasted - I've never gotten drunk yet believe it or not. I'm one of the few innocent souls left on campus that share that quality with me. In fact, sometimes I wonder if there are any left that would rather go rock climbing or skydiving with me on a Saturday evening rather than drink. If you're out there - give me a call... I need you in my life.
I forgot where I've read it - but there's someone out there that I've heard in some podcast. And I'm going to steal that idea. I'll have 10 things that are achievable that I can do with my life that are outside of my comfort zone. And they'll roll the dice and that will determine my fate. I think I need to make that happen. One of those will have to be "become a pirate." I'm not going to break the law - but maybe I'll rent a kayak and start an army of other kayakers for the day. And I'll dress up like Captain Jack Sparrow. Oh how I'd wish to be a pirate for a week. Maybe not... I'd have scurvy and there'd be a lack of oranges in my diet. But a day I could definitely do.
But the things on my die need to be crazier than that. I'm talking about "fly to Florida alone and get back to Dayton by carpooling" or something ridiculous. I want a challenge. I want a risk in my life. I want uncertainty, and most of all, I want hope. I want hope that I can be something different, something amazing and exciting. They say hope is the first step on the road to disappointment, and they're probably right. What have I to gain through something idiotic as the idea I came up with. But we'll see after I finish this experiment.
