[Anecdotal, Stupid] Poor Digital Advertising Experiences

I just visited a website on my new Asus Chromebook. Computerworld.com. It was some article about a touch-enabled chromebook that I was pondering about after I already bought this one. I impulse bought this chromebook with it's low price tag, quad core CPU, 4gb RAM, and some nice specs. I already have a Macbook Pro (one of the older thicker ones) and an iPad, but the chromebook was going to be something in between both of them. And also, the iPad that used to be my sister's old one (she got an iPad air for school), I'm selling that one. It's too slow, and I don't really use it anyways. I can only get $150 of what cost my parents probably $600, but it was worth it. I have a newer android tablet too, so I don't think I'll find myself missing it.

But I'm getting distracted. The problem was this. I browsed computer world's site just fine for about a minute until a pop up (curse those) came up. It asked me politely to turn off my ad blocker, and whenever they do that, I get it. Well... everyone except Forbes. Forbes stays blocked since they don't allow me to use the site without turning off my ad blocker. So I could just whitelist and blacklist, but I just choose to not give them any satisfaction. Even the reduced advertising experience was awful, so I just decided I hate Forbes. So I did, and the first thing I noticed was a pop-up advertisement. There was a button at the top that said something along the lines like "click to dismiss" and I clicked it and nothing happened for 20 seconds. It was a terrible and slow experience.

I shouldn't need my macbook pro with a core i5 and 8gb of ram to load a webpage because the website decides to put in 30 advertisements including pop up video ads. It's terrible and stupid and very, very, very annoying. So I had to just close out of the article. Sorry, I'd love to read you, but your ads are getting in the way of me even being able to scroll.

This is very stupid, very anecdotal, and kind of useless. Sorry if you had to read that. But I do want this to change. Advertising is great, but do I really need full screen video ads playing up as I'm reading articles? No! I just want to read the damn article. Google does ok with this with their advertising platform, but everyone else needs to step up their game.
